Chicago Journal of Sociology
The Chicago Journal of Sociology is a student-led publication founded in 2014 and supported by the University of Chicago Department of Sociology. Our mission is to showcase excellent undergraduate work in sociology from the University of Chicago and other universities, while giving student editors experience turning BA theses into published academic articles. We publish one issue yearly, with papers undergoing three rounds of review and editing. The issues we publish include papers submitted by students from all over the world.
In submissions, we value clear, straightforward prose, careful citation, and a wide range of methodological approaches, both quantitative and qualitative. Papers should be 15 pages or more, excluding notes, references, tables, and figures.
Please contact cjsuchicago@gmail.com directly for information regarding submissions or how to join the editorial staff.
The CJS Experience
“Being on the CJS Editorial Team not only provides the opportunity to gain substantial editorial skills and publishing experience, but also exposes you to interdisciplinary social science research and writing in order to better prepare you for your own research.
Having a space to chat with other sociology majors and grow our academic skills through practice with fascinating student papers has been invaluable.”

“I joined CJS in my first year, and the experience gave me insight into the undergraduate research process. Editing submissions exposed me to diverse perspectives on significant social issues worldwide while helping me learn to ask meaningful questions and think critically in my daily life. The community welcomes students majoring in Sociology and not, which really helped me connect with the interdisciplinary curiosity of UChicago.”

"CJS is where I was introduced to sociology as a major and a discipline, and also where I met many peers in the program and became friends with them. Through working with my fellow members to review, edit, and publish papers, I was introduced to an amazing community of young social scientists from a myriad of backgrounds, but who are all incredible people and passionate about the discipline and the social sciences.”
