Oaxaca Study Abroad Program
At the heart of this immersive, ten-week Winter initiative is a trilogy of courses—the Latin American Civilization sequence—delivered in English by a team of both Chicago-based and local educators. The curriculum spans the breadth of Latin American history, from its pre-Columbian roots to contemporary developments, with a particular focus on Mexico. As a core component of the program, this course sequence fulfills the College's civilization requirement. Additionally, students enroll in a Spanish language course, tailored to their skill level, to facilitate a deeper connection with the local community.
The Oaxaca Winter Quarter Program offers a singular educational experience, enabling students to delve into Mexico's integral role in Latin American history and culture. It is located in Oaxaca, a city that originated as an Aztec stronghold in the late 15th century and was later conquered by Spanish explorers in 1521. Today's Oaxaca is a vibrant metropolis of around 500,000 people, distinguished by its remarkable cultural and ethnic diversity. Guided excursions to historically significant locations in Oaxaca and other parts of Mexico supplement classroom learning, providing insights into the nation's rich heritage and the juxtaposition of traditional and modern elements.
