Ali Hortaçsu is William B. Ogden Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. His research lies at the intersection of industrial organization, econometrics, and market design. His work focuses on how firms and consumers interact in complex, data-rich environments such as auctions, digital platforms, energy, and financial markets. Using large-scale transaction data, structural models, and modern econometric and machine-learning methods, he studies pricing, competition, and consumer choice to inform both economic theory and public policy. His research has appeared in leading academic journals and has been used by regulators and firms to evaluate market performance, effects of mergers and regulations, and platform design.
Ali was awarded the Rahmi M. Koç Medal of Science (2021), and is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and fellow of the Econometric Society. He is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has served as co-editor of the Journal of Political Economy, RAND Journal of Economics, and the Handbook of Industrial Organization (vols 4 and 5). He co-authored (with Joonhwi Joo) the textbook Structural Econometric Modeling in Industrial Organization and Quantitative Marketing: Theory and Applications (Princeton University Press). He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.
