DESHPANDE SELECTED AS 2023 ALFRED P. SLOAN RESEARCH FELLOW IN ECONOMICS

Deshpande Selected as 2023 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Economics

Assistant Professor in Economics and the College, Manasi Deshpande, has been selected as a 2023 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Economics. 

The Sloan Research Fellowships, conferred annually by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, “seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise.” The fellowships are awarded yearly to early career researchers in “recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.” Fellowships are two years and $75,000. Deshpande joins a list of 36 UChicago economists who have received a Sloan Research Fellowship since the award’s founding in 1980. 

Deshpande’s research areas are empirical public finance and labor economics, with a focus on the effects of social insurance and public assistance programs and their interaction with labor markets. Recently published studies include "Does Welfare Prevent Crime? The Criminal Justice Outcomes of Youth Removed from SSI" (with Michael G. Mueller-Smith), in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and “Beyond Health: Non-Health Risk and the Value of Disability Insurance" (with Lee M. Lockwood) in Econometrica. 

Deshpande received her Ph.D. in Economics at MIT and has been at the University of Chicago since 2016. She is also Co-Director of Graduate Placement in the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics.
