PHD CANDIDATE GERMÁN VILLEGAS BAUER AWARDED BOOTH GRADUATE TEACHING PRIZE (2021)

Germán Villegas Bauer, a PhD candidate in the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics, has been named a recipient of the 2021 Wayne C. Booth Prize for Excellence in Teaching. The Booth Prize honors the important contributions that advanced graduate students make in a formal teaching capacity to programs of instruction in the College.

Villegas Bauer encouraged student participation and the use of real-life examples while teaching the course, “The Elements of Economic Analysis II.” He explained, “I try to use intuition as much as possible, instead of just mathematical formulas, to explain abstract concepts and economic behaviors from real life. I highly encourage students to think that way, and I prepare my exams with that in mind.”

Villegas Bauer’s primary research fields are Applied Macroeconomics, Financial Economics, and Political Economy, with additional interests in Environmental Economics. He is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina and his job market paper, “The Effect of the Split-Ticket Cost on Strategic Voting: Evidence from Salta, Argentina,” studies the effects on electoral outcomes of a change in the electoral system in Salta, Argentina. Following graduation this spring, he will work for the International Monetary Fund, assisting countries in the implementation of better macroeconomic policies.

Other awards and honors Villegas Bauer has received at the University of Chicago include the Martin and Margaret Lee Prize in Economics for the Highest Score on the Price Theory Core Examination (2016-2017); Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant (2018-2019); and Outstanding Graduate Lecturer for Microeconomics (2019-2020).
